In Fall of 1999, the LCMS Southeastern District Officials were contacted about starting a mission church in Pinehurst, NC. Pastor Richard Schliepsiek (who was serving as an intentional interim at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wilson, NC at the time) along with LCMS members living in the Pinehurst area, formed the official mission congregation. A wonderful worship facility was obtained and the District approved a two-year period of subsidy.
In March of 2000 Pastor Schliepsiek was called, by the District, to be the part-time mission developer at St Paul Church. With the help of ads in the paper, along with other contacts, and by simple word of mouth, an enthusiastic group of LCMS members gathered together to freshen up the rented building they now called their home church. Potlucks and other gatherings for study and planning occurred during the early months of 2000, with the first worship service taking place in May of 2000. The name St. Paul Church was chosen by the congregation. Our charter Sunday as a member congregation of the LCMS occurred Nov. 11, 2001; and our subsidy from the Southeastern District ended in August of 2002.
April of 2006 marked the historic event in the ownership and occupying of their own building. After vacating the rented church, the congregation purchased a building at 144 West Gate in West End, NC. This was a commercial building in back of a business park. Although it was an amazing step in the right direction, by owning an official building, it was hidden from the main highway and not connected to a residential community. It was a great space for worship, but did not offer much in the sense of growth and community, so the congregation concluded it was a temporary building. They continued searching for the perfect place to call home.
In March 2013, St. Paul Church was given a wonderful opportunity to purchase an existing church building located at 3253 Niagara Carthage Road, Whispering Pines, NC. The purchase was finalized on November 13, 2013. The congregation spent several weekends cleaning, painting, and rebuilding the altar area of the church. Currently St. Paul Church is located in the growing community of Whispering Pines, only a few miles from Pinehurst and Southern Pines. The new location has space to expand our service to the community by providing a Pre-School, a Sunday School, and Youth Programs. With the purchase of this new building, St. Paul Church has begun a new era in the LCMS mission in the Sandhills of North Carolina.
Our current minister is Reverend Denton White, who was called to the ministry of St. Paul Church after the retirement of Reverend Richard Schliepsiek in October 2010. Pastor White was installed on Reformation Sunday 2010 and provides the congregation with ministerial guidance. St. Paul congregation commits itself to being a Lutheran community of faith, based on:
The Word of God and its primary teaching of Law and Gospel.
The great commission of our Resurrected Lord to evangelize the world and build up the body of Christ.
GOD HAS RICHLY BLESSED ST. PAUL CHURCH IN MANY WAYS.
We are a unique traditional congregation and may God lead us to follow Him into the exciting future He has chosen for us.
